Ireland to allow class actions

Ireland is joining the European class action wave. What firms should know about the Irish regime and the opportunity it creates.

Ireland had become the latest jurisdiction to allow Irish consumers to bring class actions.

The new law transposes the EU's Consumer Rights Directive into Irish law.

Described as a 'first' in Irish law, Ministers have welcomed the news as its provides more consumer protection.

“The new mechanism has been dubbed the “European class action” and will allow designated qualified entities to take enforcement action in the Irish courts on behalf of a group of consumers whose rights have been breached either in Ireland or in another EU country.”
